Dana Burkholder

D_ua_coach_800x600_small
Dana’s athletic career began on the baseball fields of Southern California, where she joined her three older siblings on the youth sports circuit. At the age of seven she switched from baseball to track and field and within three years she won four TAC National Championships – the 1500 meter in 1989 and 1990, and the 800 meter in 1990. Her final win was the Bantam Division TAC National Cross Championship in 1990.

Dana’s family relocated to Bakersfield, California in 1991 and she picked up a new sport – volleyball. She was named MVP of her very first team in the 6th grade and there was no looking back. By her senior year in high school, she had won a Club Volleyball National Championship with Kern River Volleyball Club, a High School Valley Championship and the Bakersfield, California Volleyball Player of the Year award twice.

Dana became a member of the U.S. Junior National Team at the end of her junior year in high school. She was named the team captain in 1998 and led the team to the Norceca Championship in Cuernavaca, Mexico. In 2000, the team trained at the Lake Placid Olympic Training Center and finished 8th at the Norceca Championships in Saskatoon, Canada.

Dana’s success continued in college. At the University of Arizona, she became a two-time first-team All-American, the 2000 Pac-10 Player of the Year, Female Athlete of the Year, and led the Wildcats to their first and only Final Four appearance in 2001.

Following her success in college, Dana was invited to join the U.S. National Team in 2003 and trained with them at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She also played professionally in Italy’s A-1 premier league in 2005.

Following her professional career, Dana coached at the high school and club level and continued to conduct her own volleyball clinics throughout the Western United States.

In 2006, Dana signed on to the coaching staff at the University of Arizona. Coaching at her alma matter was a tremendous experience and gave her a lot of insight into the minds of young athletes and how achieving success isn't just about winning. Success has a lot of components - including the ability to maintain a balanced and healthy approach to sports and competition. This experience inspired Dana to pursue working with athletes to not only improve their physical skills, but their mental skills as well.

In November, 2007 Dana was inducted into the University of Arizona Hall of Champions along with softball phenom Jenni Finch and 6 other wildcat athletes.

This year Dana will be starting her first FULL season with Temecula as Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator.  Dana will be working with all the coaches in the Viper family as well as heading the efforts to continue the successful placement of all our recruitable High School athletes.  She will also head coach two teams for this seasons competitions.
