Q - Why should we consider Temecula Volleyball Club “Viper”?
We have worked hard to create what is one of the most complete club volleyball programs in the country. Our athletes have at their disposal quality practice facilities, caring, responsible and well-trained coaches, as well as coaching techniques, skill training and a fitness and conditioning program monitored by trained professionals.
Most importantly, we have created an environment, which is positive and well rounded. We believe that good values attract good people. Players are not promised anything more than excellent training and playing opportunities, but never guaranteed a position or specific playing time. That is earned and changes frequently during the course of a season.
Q - How do I know what level to tryout for? We try to create opportunities, which make it possible for every player to participate. In some cases, a player’s ability will determine the team they are selected for. But in many cases, the selection is based on the comfort level of each family, which takes into account the time and financial considerations for each level.
If you are a highly skilled athlete, you will probably be selected for a Travel or Elite team, unless you have let us know beforehand that level of commitment is not what your family is looking for.
It is very important not to tryout at a level which you do not intend on participating in. As an example, if you have decided that a local level commitment is what your family is comfortable with, DO NOT tryout with the Elite and Travel players, “just to see what team you might have made”.
Q - How many tryouts should I attend?
ELITE, TRAVEL AND REGIONAL - Although, we have two tryout dates for each age group, attendance at our initial tryout date is MANDATORY for any players trying out for our Elite, Travel and Regional teams. We recognize that this may create conflict for those players wanting to tryout at various clubs. However, our focus will be on the players who are as committed to our program, as our coaches are.
LOCAL - For the local players, you only need to attend one evaluation, fill out the paperwork, and you will be placed on a team.
Q - When will we find out if I made a team?
Many players will be notified at the first tryout date. Each team is carefully selected, as each coach is looking for key players to fill specific positions. Once a player is offered a spot on an Elite, Travel or Regional team, and they accept, they will be required to pay a $500 deposit, which will be applied to their season’s dues and fees.
Local team participants will simply need to register and pay the first month’s dues and uniform fees.
Q - What is my “tryout” age?
Your tryout age is how old your player is on or before September 1, 2009. As an example if you turn 15 on August 31, 2009 – your tryout age is 15. If you turn 15 on September 1, 2009, your tryout age is 14.
Q - Does Viper field competitive teams?
Absolutely! We have won the Volleyball Festival 5 times, a feat only duplicated by some of the oldest and most established clubs from San Diego to Bakersfield. In 2008 we had three teams qualify for the Junior Olympics.
Our teams have been featured in national volleyball magazines. Over 90% of our graduating seniors have continued to play volleyball at the collegiate level. The local High School teams are full of players from our club, including many, many freshmen that are starting on their varsity and junior varsity teams.
For the 2008/09 seasons, Dana Burkholder takes over as Head Coach and college recruiting coordinator. She will direct the practice and training for all Elite Teams. Rob Machan, head coach at Sacred Heart University returns on a regular basis to work on specialized training with our players. They bring a higher level of experience and knowledge to our program, which will benefit all of our teams and coaches.
Q - What if I am not sure about committing to the team I was selected for?
Our goal is to place each player on a team where they have a realistic opportunity to contribute. We will not be placing players on a team, which is not their appropriate level, with the intent to “train at a higher level, but not expect to play much in tournaments”. This is much too hard on the player, coach and especially the parents.
Depending on what your family is looking for, we may not be the best choice for you, this season. No problem, just be honest and up front with us. This allows the player and the club to pursue other options. There are many outstanding programs in Southern California.
Once your deposit is paid and you have accepted that position on the team, then we know of your intent to participate in our program.
Q - How are teams selected, and what does Elite, Travel, Regional and local mean?
Obviously skill is a major determining factor. However, many times the only factor that separates one player from nine others with equal ability is their attitude on the court and desire to be a part of our program.
We will make our best effort to find a place for every person to play. For this reason, we have four different skill and commitment levels. We take pride in offering a first rate, local and highly competitive volleyball program.
ELITE is the group of athletes with the highest level of skill and commitment. They will practice 6 hours per week, in addition to any specialized training or conditioning available to them, and participate in 9 regular season tournaments, as well as several two-day tournaments and the weeklong Volleyball Festival and/or the Junior Olympics.
TRAVEL will participate in the same schedule of 9 regular season tournaments as the Elite teams, but will not have the commitment of the additional 2-day tournaments or attempt to qualify for the Junior Olympics. They will practice 4 hours per week, in addition to any specialized training or conditioning available to them. The weeklong Volleyball Festival is part of this team’s schedule.
REGIONAL will participate in the same schedule of 9 regular season tournaments as the Travel teams. They will practice 4 hours per week, in addition to any specialized training or conditioning available to them. The weeklong Volleyball Festival is not a part of this team’s schedule.
LOCAL is an outstanding opportunity for girls who are not able to participate on our travel teams, but would still like to be a part of a competitive volleyball team. These teams will practice 3 hours per week and participate in 6 tourneys, including our end of the year in-house tournament at Rancho Sports Center. Tournaments will be in Temecula or Poway. All teams are coached by trained volleyball coaches not parent volunteers.
V-BALL CLASSES are for those players who did not make a team or were unable to commit to the requirements to be on a travel team. Classes will be broken down by age and ability and will run year round. One hour of practice per week, as well as a tournament at Rancho Sports Center every 4 months.
